Ecology, environmental protection, and the preservation of water quality are permanent priorities in the activities of the port operator. These priorities are pursued in a focused, systematic, and effective manner, in full compliance with applicable national and European legislation. The port implements a policy aimed at preventing and limiting adverse environmental impacts, while continuously striving to improve its environmental performance.
Special attention is paid to the storage and handling of metal scrap, which is carried out in clearly designated and properly marked areas, suitably fenced and with controlled access. Continuous monitoring ensures that cargo does not extend beyond the designated areas, and established technological instructions and procedures for safe handling and storage are strictly applied. The personnel involved in these activities have received the necessary training and environmental protection briefings.
In the near future, the introduction of a continuous cargo wetting system during handling and storage is planned, with the aim of preventing and minimizing dust emissions into the ambient air, both within the port area and beyond the operational sites. This measure is part of the operator’s long-term policy to improve air quality and reduce the impact on surrounding residential areas.
The treatment of industrial and stormwater is carried out through installed and properly maintained two- and three-stage sludge and oil separators, which ensure effective retention of pollutants prior to discharge. Continuous monitoring and periodic laboratory testing of the quality of the treated water are conducted, with results documented and retained in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The port also conducts regular annual monitoring of ambient air quality and the levels of dust emissions generated during cargo handling operations at the various technological sites. Monitoring data are analyzed and used to plan additional preventive and corrective measures aimed at sustainable development and the reduction of the environmental footprint of port operations.
The environmental protection policy is an integral part of the overall port management system and is periodically updated in line with best practices and regulatory changes.
